There are a variety of magicians. Stage illusionists (big crowds, big stage, school show), Parlor magician (medium sized event, around 50-75 people), close-up magician (around 15-20 people), walk around (you guessed it, walking around), kids parties.
Depending on how many people are at your event will depend on what kind of magician you hire. Some magicians specialize in kids shows while others do all events. There are also different personalities: classic and very formal, chill street magic, zany comedy and corporate.
This is often the biggest dealbreaker. What is your budget and what are you looking for? Remember that you are paying for their experience, talent and their time.
Think about what you get: an experienced magician knows how to warm up a crowd, hold interest and make your event extra magical. They are on-time/early, communicate before and after the gig, look professional and have a pleasant demeanor. Their magic will also showcase their level of experience.
These are the breakdown in charges for my shows:
You should receive some form of confirmation prior to the show. I like to do a week out and then the day before. Then, I confirm on arrival.
Upon arrival, I find the best space if I’m doing my full show or spot where people are congregating if it’s walk-around.
I perform, engaging as many people as possible. Upon conclusion of my stage/parlor show, I ask if anyone wants to see some close-up. If so, I do about 15-20 minutes of that. I verify that everything is good, collect the payment, and exit.
That’s completely understandable. 90% of the time when I get a call, the person has the party time and date set but doesn’t know when to have the magic done or what type of magic they want.
I offer free consultations to help you plan on guest arrival time, order of events, and how I can facilitate the magic planning. I want the hiring and planning process to be as easy as possible for you so everyone can focus on having fun!
With some clever apparatus, possibly. However, I don’t think I would get hired again and my insurance wouldn’t cover it 😉
